Periodontology is the field focusing on preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the gum, the bone and alveolodental ligament.
The accumulation of dental plaque determined by inadequate oral hygiene and patient’s habits are the main causes that lead to periodontal disease:
The most common periodontal surgical procedures are:
- subgingival curettage
- bone grafting
Initial untreated symptoms: spontaneous or post brushing gum swelling and bleeding can lead to periodontal disease. Gradually, the disease evolves to more profound structures, the gum starts receding from the tooth, periodontal gaps or “pockets” start appearing followed by damage to the soft tissue and bone and even tooth loss.
Periodontal disease can be prevented through a few basic measures: using correct brushing techniques, professional teeth cleaning every 6 months, use of dental floss and mouthwash.
